Qixi Festival (七夕节), also known as Qiqiao (乞巧节) and the Double Seventh Festival (七月初七), falls on the 7th day of the 7th of the lunar month in the Chinese calendar. It is an annual celebration of the Chinese folk tale of the The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl (牛郎和织女) where two lovers, Zhinü (the weaver girl who symbolises the star Vega) and Niulang (the cowherd who symbolises the star Altair) (织女和牛郎) were forbidden to be together and thus were separated and banished to opposite sides of the heavenly river (the milkyway). Once a year, magpies would form a bridge across the river to allow the lovers to reunite for just one day on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month.
Celebrators on this day have a variety of different traditions to commemorate the reunion of the forbidden lovers. The girls participate in the worshipping of celestials during rituals such as going to their local temples to pray to Zhinü for wisdom and burning paper items as offerings. They are also known for reciting traditional prayers for dexterity in needlework and showing off their domestic skills to symbolise the talents of being a good spouse and make wishes to find a good husband to marry. In addition to this, the festival also has a special meaning to newlywed couples who would worship the celestial couple for one last time and say farewell to them and to symbolise a happy marriage and showed that the married woman is now treasured by her new family. On this day, worshippers would look to the sky to stargaze for Vega and Altair in the Milky Way and it is said that if it rains on this day, that it is the fallen tears of the separated couple.
